Team Coaching

How to create team cohesion and

effectiveness amidst a global pandemic

The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
— Aristotle

You’ve most likely come across this famous Aristotle quote. In 2012 Google launched Project Aristotle to find out what makes a team effective. What emerged were five distinct elements that together create a high-performing team. The most important of those elements is psychological safety.

Team coaching is different than individual coaching. Individual coaching focuses on the needs and goals of the individual client, whereas team coaching focuses on the team as a whole; in other words, the team is the client.

Team coaching offers an opportunity to study factors that affect team performance and establish and ensure everyone is aligned to collective goals.

Teams are coached to explore how much psychological safety exists and what potential issues may prevent the team from fostering all five critical elements of a high-performing team.

The COVID-19 pandemic will no doubt impact organizational teams in profound ways. Relying solely on virtual communications, teams must proactively examine how team dynamics have changed, and implement strategies to adapt to the challenges that long-term virtual interaction will bring.

Team coaching can help co-create actionable steps to optimize team performance and team goal attainment.

Using the Hogan™ Team Assessments, we identify key areas of strengths, potential team derailers, and shared values.

The Hogan Team Report draws on personality assessment to help teams identify and understand three internal dynamics:

Team strengths and weaknesses

In order to maximize strengths, high performing teams should have a balance of people across five key psychological roles.

Potential team fracture lines

In order to maintain harmony, teams have to recognize and mitigate the negative personality characteristics that can derail success.

Team culture and shared values

Shared values and drivers are vital in working toward a common goal, and are critical to the ongoing success of any team.

Benefits of Team Coaching

Benefits of Team Coaching include:

  • Alignment of goals

  • Identification of potential team derailers and how to deal with them

  • Improved team member communication and relationships

  • A better understanding of roles and responsibilities

  • Improved ability to engage in difficult conversations

  • Appreciation for others’ input and perspectives

  • Improved team performance

How does Team Coaching work?

Once a holistic view of the team is presented, team coaching begins by establishing an ongoing process that brings team members together to develop actionable performance improvement steps.

The process's length varies depending on team size (max 15) and the overall goals. A typical team coaching duration is anywhere between 3 to 6 months.

When should a team consider Team Coaching?

Team coaching can be useful for:

  • Teams facing change, e.g. a new leader introduced

  • Overcoming challenges involving a project

  • When team dysfunction is a barrier to goal attainment

  • Matrixed or global teams

  • Virtual teams

Why should a leadership team consider Team Coaching?

The single focus of team coaching is helping teams to reach their organizational goals. Even high-performing teams may hit snags every once in a while and benefit from taking stock of their team effectiveness.

Team coaching is a process whereby goals are clarified, barriers identified, and actions are planned to help teams achieve even the most challenging stretch goals.

Among some of the research studies exploring the effects of team coaching, researchers Hackman and Wageman (2005) found that team coaching can boost team performance and effectiveness. Similarly, in a 2010 empirical study, researchers found that team coaching led to team effectiveness (Liu, Lin, Huang & Lin (2010, November).
